Jumping With Joy

Jumping With Joy

I am famous for creating a crying scene when I have to leave Guru to back to my home country. Some years ago it happened that my flight was leaving JFK Airport at noon, which is very unusual for European flights. I had to leave the Tennis Court very early, and my sobbing was worse than usual. After I left, Guru asked some of the disciples why I had been crying so pitifully. They explained to Guru that I was sad because I was flying home and that my flight was leaving at noon. Guru shook his head and said, "But her plane is not leaving before midnight! She will see me again in the evening." The disciples answered Guru that my flight was at noon, but he of course knew better. I arrived at the airport only to find out that my flight was delayed 12 hours. The man at the check-in counter was utterly confused. All the other passengers were upset about the delay, but I was jumping with joy. I took the next cab back to the Tennis Court.

Joyful Heart

Joyful Heart

In the late 1970s, while we were setting up the Centre in Adelaide, I suddenly become overwhelmed with all sorts of inner and outer problems. I wrote to Guru about my problems one morning and took the letter with me to post during my morning run. At the first mailbox, I popped the letter through the slot. Immediately an aroma of the finest incense wafted from the opening. I sensed that Guru had heard my cries and dealt with them immediately. I continued on my run with a light, joyful heart, feeling I had not a trouble in the world.

In each city we visit on the Christmas trip, Guru will usually offer a Peace Concert for the local people. On occasion these Peace Concerts are quite spontaneous, with only a few days to prepare, promote and make final arrangements. When we were in Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, I was assigned to try and find a venue for a large Peace Concert to be given in this spiritual Buddhist city. Unfortunately we had no luck with the authorities in waiving red tape and official permits. The only place that was available was outrageously expensive, so Guru decided to hold the Peace Concert in the meeting room of the hotel where quite a few disciples were staying. Because we did not have official permission from the authorities, we could only advertise it by word of mouth. Disciples invited taxi drivers, people they met in the street and even storekeepers at shops where they had purchased goods. The day of the concert, Sarama approached me and asked if she could invite the owners of the small hotel where she was staying, which was in a different location from the hotel where the concert would be. I suggested that Sarama approach one of Guru's assistants and ask him to check with Guru. We were standing in the meeting room, which was being rearranged for the concert, and Guru was sitting in the front of the room sketching his dream-freedom-peace-birds. When Sarama approached Guru's assistant, he considered this not an important enough reason to disturb Guru. Sarama was upset, but I could see that the boy was adamant in not disturbing Guru. I looked at Guru and inwardly said: "Guru, what can we do in this situation?" He immediately stopped sketching, looked up and said: "You people must bring in more chairs as the disciples staying at the other hotels will want to invite the owners."

Guru's Oneness

Guru's Oneness

For a while I had an apartment on the ground floor. There was a backyard that was not protected by a fence. One night during the summer it was quite hot, and I placed a fan in the doorway between my bedroom and the kitchen—something I didn't normally do. During the night a robber broke into the house. He actually went into my bedroom and stole what little jewellery I had, as well as my purse. Fortunately, I did not hear him because of the fan and did not wake up. In the morning I realised that I had been robbed, and I rushed to the telephone to call Guru. I had totally forgotten that Guru's number was unlisted! The next moment the phone rang. It was Guru and I was able to tell him what happened. Guru knew I was trying to call him and he called me instead. This is our Guru's oneness with us.

Guru's Eyes

Guru's Eyes

In 1976, Guru sent me to Adelaide to start a Centre. It was a wonderful honour and privilege to serve Guru in this way. However, during the first six months of my time in Adelaide, a city unfamiliar to me, I had many moments when I felt isolated, both outwardly and inwardly. One morning I was meditating on the Transcendental photo when Guru's eyes appeared to turn brown and become quite alive. I was enjoying this experience for a few moments when the phone rang. It was Guru calling from New York to ask me what I was doing.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness

When I came to New York for the first or second time, I was dying to get more attention from Guru on the outer plane. When I inwardly caught myself thinking such childish things, I knew it was not good, but I still wanted attention. One day, when I was taking prasad, Guru said my name. He did not call me, but just said my name aloud. After that, every time I went to take prasad, I inwardly begged Guru to say my name again, and Guru did so very often. One day I realised that Guru was just reading my mind and showering me with his infinite compassion and grace. The next time I went for prasad, I again started asking Guru inwardly to say my name. When I was in front of Guru, he said my name with an intonation as if he was doing heavy work and in spite of being tired, he was still doing it because I asked him to. I was shocked by that intonation. I realised that Guru hears all my thoughts, and I felt ashamed that I was demanding Guru's outer attention all the time and giving practically nothing to him in return. This experience taught me that Guru, like a loving father, fulfils all the demands of his spoiled children-disciples. When I read later in Guru's books that a spiritual Master serves his disciples, I clearly saw what it meant, and I prayed for Guru's forgiveness.

Fight , Fight , Fight

Fight , Fight , Fight

Sometimes Guru will tell you things that you are feeling and experiencing that you are not even necessarily conscious of. Many years ago. I was out doing some errands for the restaurant. I remember feeling very strongly a change inside of me; I felt a kind of relief, like everything was released. That evening I happened to see Guru, and he said, "So, Nishtha, how are you feeling? Are you feeling better today?" I said, "Yes, Guru, thank you." Then Guru said to everybody—it was really a shock for me—"Yes, today she feels better. Today she feels relieved. But why? Because she has decided that she will just give up in her spiritual life. Do not give up! Do not give up! Do not give up! Fight, fight, fight!"
